Saint-Étienne Cathedral
Nicknamed God’s lantern, Metz’s Saint-Étienne Cathedral has one of the largest Gothic glass surfaces in France: more than six thousand square metres of stained glass, including some by Marc Chagall. You linger together in the nave to spot the Creation of Adam or the prophet Daniel, comparing your favourite colours. Outside, Place d’Armes and its terraces naturally extend the visit.
Place Saint-Louis and Temple Neuf
With its tilted medieval arcades and weathered façades, Place Saint-Louis is one of the most photogenic squares in the city. Cafés and restaurants line it, perfect for a shady break. A little further, Temple Neuf, set on an island of the Moselle, raises its neo-Romanesque towers above the water: its reflection at sunset is a classic Metz date spot.
The German Gate and the historic quarter
To the east, the German Gate spans the Seille like a little fortress, and the visit ends on ramparts open to walkers. Rue Taison, Chèvremont and Fournirue then line their shops and memories. On Lyad, Metz members share their favourite routes; it is up to you to pick someone to push the door of a bookshop or a café with.
